DANGERS ARISING FROM INADEQUATE MANAGEMENT OF WORKPLACE TRANSPORT

DANGERS ARISING FROM INADEQUATE MANAGEMENT OF WORKPLACE TRANSPORT

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health [IOSH] reported on an incident that highlighted the dangers of inadequate management of workplace transport in their March 2024 magazine where a delivery driver suffered traumatic brain injury after a fall from a trailer. The topic of transport safety in the workplace is something that the Health & Safety Authority [HSA] is keen to address and regularly look for an organisation’s pedestrian and transport management plan. Where there is no plan, or an inadequate plan, Cinnte Safety Limited are often asked to report on a facility and then prepare a Pedestrian and Transportation Plan, complete with layout drawings, for inclusion in the organisation’s Safety Management System [SMS].

On 28th July 2022, Timothy Bates was working in a trailer attached to his truck when it was struck by a forklift truck reversing out of a nearby mill. The collision shunted the trailer and Timothy fell to the tarmac below hitting his head on the tarmac below. As a result of his injury, he required a five-week stay in hospital and 13 weeks in a care facility.

The UK company, Haldane Fisher Limited, failed to identify safe systems of work for the delivery of fuel to temporary generators at its site, and as a result Timothy Bates got seriously injured. The company were fined £380K by Birmingham Magistrates’ Court because although the company understood the risks and had identified control measures, these had not been implemented.

“This case highlights the dangers arising from inadequate management of workplace transport,” said HSE inspector Heather Campbell, who investigated the case.

Cinnte Safety Limited are experts in transportation and pedestrian management planning, helping organisations to risk assess their facility, make recommendations for the implementation of appropriate control measures, and prepare a Pedestrian and Transportation [PTMP] for inclusion in the SMS.
